WILDER YOUTH | HEDGELAYING WORKSHOP

You’ve told us you want to learn practical skills that benefit wildlife, and the health of our hedgerows is vital! Hayley Dorrington, our Senior Heathlands Officer, will give us a bit of background on hedgelaying and the stunning backdrop for the day (Brankley Pastures nature reserve), before going on to teach us how to safely lay a hedge.

Using our brains and braun (with the help of a few tools), we’ll work together to tidy up nice stretch of hedgerow on this beautiful nature reserve.

Alexis Johnson, our Wilder Youth project lead, will host this face to face workshop, making sure coffee, tea, and biscuits are always topped up as well as supporting Hayley and all participants where she can.

Wilder Youth is a unique project, targeted at 16-24s who are keen to work together to make a positive change for wildlife in Staffordshire. Being an activist can be lonely work – so we’re holding the space to provide training, venues, and guidance to bring you together! You’ll be responsible for guiding the project…Staffordshire Wildlife Trust is just here to help.

Wilder Youth is funded by UHNM Charity/NHS Charities Together.

Hayley Dorrington is our Senior Heathlands Officer. Her day to day workload is managing the Trust’s heathland sites; in her spare time, she loves to spend time with her little girl, Hazel, doing lots of minibeast hunting and exploring local green spaces. She also loves hedgelaying, and takes part in regional and national hedgelaying competitions. (You heard us. There are hedging competitions – and they’re great fun!)

Alexis is our Wild Wellbeing Lead; she has worked with Staffordshire Wildlife Trust for nine years. She’s a mum of two children, a guinea pig, and a cheeky dog. She is also a Mental Health First Aider and has a certificate in ecotherapy. Alexis loves wildlife and is a champion for environmental issues – and loves talking about it with others. (Honestly, we can’t keep her quiet!)
