Welcome to March everyone, there\’s plenty happening this month to be aware of! International Women’s Day, Mother’s Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday are all coming up and will be here sooner than you think!
One of the largest events around the world this March is Ramadan, not only in its importance in Islam but also in its length! Ramadan Mubarak to all who will be observing and celebrating this Blessed Month.
I am not Muslim myself but I would encourage anyone to find some time to do a little research into Ramadan over March, I have found myself enjoying reading every bit of information I can find and while this Holy Month allows Muslim men and women to increase their God consciousness and try to be the best version of themselves, I believe everyone can find inspiration in how Ramadan encourages a huge amount of self-reflection community, charity and time with your family.
Also if you have friends, family or co-workers who will be celebrating Ramadan, please remember they will be fasting during this time! They may be completely fine with you eating next to them, but please ask if they don’t mind before you do! It’s a simple gesture of respect and will build further upon a good relationship.
Now, with the theme of charity and community in mind, let’s take a look at what Volunteering opportunities are currently available!
Session Support, Staffordshire Children’s Centres
Planning activities, supporting children in a friendly environment, assisting children, playing with the children.
Classroom Volunteer, Young Enterprise
Class Mentor volunteers support young people to develop their financial and enterprise skills within our one-day school-based programmes. Volunteers help to facilitate a group of young people across varied age groups to undertake pre-designed tasks, and share their own experiences to help bring the activities to life. Volunteers can be individuals or groups – employers looking for volunteering opportunities for staff welcomed.
Vegan Community Advocate, The Vegan Society
What does the Advocate role involve?
Being an Advocate for veganism with The Vegan Society will mean communicating with people in your local community. You’ll share the benefits of a vegan lifestyle. You will form part of a local group, headed up by a local Organiser. The Organiser will feed back your collective efforts to staff. You will also be invited to our private Facebook group, for vegan socialising and ideas sharing.
Advisor Volunteer, Citizens Advice Mid-Mercia
Some examples of what you could do:
• find the information online that explains how to apply for Housing Benefit in a client’s local area and explain it to them
• identify what steps a client can take to resolve their problem with a second-hand car
• help a client find and understand what steps they can take to deal with their rent arrears
Oxfam E-Commerce Volunteer, Oxfam Tamworth
The Oxfam Online Shop sells a wide range of unique items that have kindly been donated to us by our supporters. Every day our wonderful team of volunteers list hundreds of items, including second-hand women’s, men’s and children’s clothing, rare collectables, books, rare vinyl, vintage wedding dresses, and so much more!
If anyone at all is thinking of Volunteering during Ramadan and the above roles don’t seem appealing, or if you’d like to discuss what else is available, please do not hesitate to contact me using my details below! May practicing sawm and increasing in your salah bring light to your soul this Ramadan.
Thank you very much for reading and I hope everyone, of all ages, backgrounds, cultures and religions, have a wonderful month and take care of yourselves both physically and mentally. Back again next month!
Kindest Regards,
Mitchell Dodd
