Here’s a snapshot of what’s available right now across the county:
Advisors
Using your detective skills, empathy, local knowledge and problem solving skills to help and support people in their time of need, either face to face or on the phone:
• Citizens Advice South East are looking for an Advisor to support them at their offices in Burntwood or Lichfield. They give full training and are a supportive team that help people to understand options available to them to help solve their problems, whether this be a legal letter, overdue utilities, support with claiming benefits, housing issues and more. This is a lovely role to make a difference to people and have an impact.
• Support Staffordshire have vacancies in the Volunteering Team for Volunteer Advisors who help people thinking about volunteering to find their perfect role. If you like helping people, problem solving and are good at communicating by phone and email, this is a really rewarding role.
Befrienders
Checking in on lonely and/or isolated people and having a conversation with them to brighten their day, help them adjust to new situations and improve their mental wellbeing:
• Care Plus oversee lots of Retirement Living Schemes around the county and are often looking for people who can pop in and chat to some of their residents and help them to engage with activities within the retirement complex.
• Home-Start help families to increase in confidence and independence and often need volunteers to support their services through Family Support Volunteers. These volunteers are matched to families and listen and support them with bringing up young children, helping their emotional wellbeing, widening their network of support and helping them to become more independent. This is a really rewarding role for anyone with experience of bringing up a family.
• Companion Grove CIC are looking for volunteers to visit an assigned older neighbour for one hour each week to provide companionship, a listening ear and build a consistent friendship.
Gardeners
There are many roles for people whether you’re a budding amateur or Alan Titchmarsh himself. All enjoying the opportunity to improve the local environment for someone whilst enjoying being outside on allotments, keeping parks from becoming overgrown or maintaining a manicured garden, there’s always somewhere needing help:
• Belgrave Community Allotment and Garden in Tamworth are always looking for people to join their team looking after the community allotment. This relaxed group welcome anyone with any level of experience or none.
• National Trust Shugborough have many acres of gardens and parkland to suit all skills of gardener. There’s everyday tasks of tidying, edging, weeding and leaf collecting, along with more physical tasks of tree planting, landscaping and hedging. Plenty of choice!
