Residents across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent are being urged to take extra care as both the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Met Office have issued amber-level alerts for extreme heat during this week.
The UKHSA Amber Heat-Health Alert for the West Midlands is in effect from 12pm on Tuesday 11 August until 9pm on Friday 14 August 2026. The alert warns that significant impacts on health and social care services are likely due to prolonged high temperatures.
Alongside this, the Met Office Amber Extreme Heat Warning is in place for Thursday 13 August, with temperatures across parts of the Midlands expected to reach 37°C to 38°C.
Why This Matters
According to UKHSA, the hot weather is likely to increase health risks, particularly for:
- Older people aged 65 and over
- People with existing health conditions
- Young children
- Disabled people
- Those living alone
- Individuals in care settings or poorly ventilated homes
The alert warns of increased demand on health and social care services, overheating in hospitals and care homes, challenges for frontline workers, and increased risks for vulnerable people living independently. Travel disruption and water-related incidents may also increase during the heatwave
How To Stay Safe
The Met Office advises people to:
- Drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated
- Keep out of direct sunlight where possible
- Avoid strenuous activity between 11am and 3pm
- Close curtains or blinds in rooms exposed to direct sunlight
- Wear sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors
- Carry water when travelling
- Check transport services before setting out on longer journeys
Look Out For Others
As temperatures rise, community support becomes even more important.
Please consider checking in on:
- Older neighbours
- Friends and relatives living alone
- People with long-term health conditions
- Anyone who may struggle to keep cool or stay hydrated
A simple phone call, visit or offer of assistance could make a significant difference during periods of extreme heat.
