Spotlight on: Food
Good food for health. Good food for the environment. Good food for the economy.
Does any of this spark an interest in you?
Over the last couple of years, there has been an exciting increase in the number of conversations we at Support Staffordshire have been part of which include ‘food’ as a central pillar of discussion, and they can be broadly lumped into three themes:
Food for Health. How do we ensure that all people have enough food to eat to live a healthy, thriving life, and that the food we eat is healthy, nutritious, accessible, affordable, and culturally appropriate? What is the essential role of food banks and other organisations in this, who may help people who are not just facing food insecurity, but also possibly fuel debt, insecure housing, or other health conditions? How do we build positive food behaviours throughout life?
Food for the Environment. How do we make sure our food is grown in a way which supports, not damages nature? How do community gardens and allotments contribute to the health and wellbeing of our communities? How do we reduce food waste in homes and businesses?
Food for the Economy. How do we support our small local farmers and food producers? What would it take for more people to buy locally produced food, support farmers markets and farm shops, and keep our local food economy thriving?
One way of bringing these threads together is through a Staffordshire Food Partnership. Want to be a part of the conversation? Join our workshop on Monday 9th February, 10am-1pm at the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust Wolseley Centre.
