At the end of September, our Volunteer Buddies team had the pleasure of visiting WELLIES, where founders Julie and Nick have created an inspiring and welcoming place. Since 2009, the project has supported people recovering from mental ill health through therapeutic learning activities involving animals, plants, creativity and the countryside.
The beautiful outdoor spaces and allotment provide a welcoming setting in which people can learn, connect and grow in confidence. To make the project even more accessible, WELLIES offers free minibus transfers, with dedicated pick-up and drop-off points for clients. WELLIES also offers a varied programme of practical and creative activities, from floristry to woodwork. During our visit, we watched part of an entertaining sausage-making session and spoke with participants whose knowledge of agriculture and horticulture was remarkable. They described the real difference WELLIES has made to their quality of life, helping them develop skills, form new connections and feel more positive about the future. Many participants also progress into volunteering, employment or enterprise opportunities.

We came away full of admiration for the care, energy and imagination behind the project. We also saw how our Volunteer Buddies service could complement this work by supporting people who may feel unsure about attending for the first time. A friendly face, reassurance and practical support can make that first step feel much easier. We are working with WELLIES to connect people from across our Development Officer locations with the project. WELLIES shares our commitment to helping people build confidence, learn new skills and feel connected to their community, and we look forward to building a positive partnership together.
